Missionary Sunday

My lesson this week also comes from a Yahoo Groups member who posted this a few weeks ago. I absolutely loved the idea so I'm doing it this Sunday. I'm only doing this with Sr. Primary. My Jr. Primary lesson is at the bottom of this post.

I asked our ward mission leader to come in and pose as our investigator. He will ask the questions listed below and the children will answer with a primary song they find in the Primary Songbook (and since he sings with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, it's a perfect fit!). I found about 15 Songbooks from various ward members, our Primary closet and the library so there will be about 1 book for 2 children. They can flip to the back and look under "topics" for help. Then they'll be able to use their books as they sing to our "investigator."

After each song our "investigator" will summarize by saying things like, "I never knew that we all lived with Heavenly Father and Jesus before we came here! That's great!" And compliment the children afterwards, pointing out that just from the primary songs they know, the children could be really great missionaries NOW.

Here are the questions and the most likely answers the kids will come up with. Obviously, answers will vary...

Q: What church do you belong to?
a: THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST #77

Q: What is your relationship to God? What do you know of Him?
a: I KNOW MY FATHER LIVES #5

Q: Where did we live before we were born?
a: I LIVED IN HEAVEN #4

Q: What is Faith?
a: FAITH #96

Q: Where did the Book of Mormon come from?
a: THE GOLDEN PLATES #86

Q: As I read the Book of Mormon, how will I know it's true?
a: SEARCH, PONDER, AND PRAY #109

Q: After I get baptized, what else do I need to do to live with Heavenly Father again?
a: KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS # 146

Q: Thanks for sharing your testimonies with me. Is there anything else you would like to tell me before I go?
a: I AM A CHILD OF GOD

For Jr. Primary we are just going to sing I Hope They Call Me on a Mission. While we sing, I have a Pin-the-Tie-on-the-Missionary game (runs just like pin the tail on the donkey). I purchased my game several years ago but if you want to make one, just draw a missionary on a poster board, cut out a tie (or a few), bring some masking tape and a bandana and voila! Easy!

UPDATE: I found a version of Pin-the-Tie on the missionary on a blog if you are interested in making one.  Find it HERE.

See my updated version of this lesson plan HERE which includes several printables and a new option for doing a similar lesson plan with Jr. primary.

Another thing you could do with this, that I think I'll do with our large Primary, is to put the song titles on pieces of paper and maybe with pictures up on the board for them to choose from instead of from the book. I think this might also work for the Junior Primary. GREAT idea!!! Love your blog! THANK YOU!
